2001 Husqvarna CR 250 – Italian-Built Two-Stroke Motocross Alternative

The 2001 Husqvarna CR 250 was an evolutionary model rather than an all-new generation, continuing the Italian-built Husqvarna 250 motocross platform into the new century. At a time when Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki dominated the 250 two-stroke class, the CR 250 offered something considerably less common: European chassis character, distinctive styling and a powerful 249.3 cc two-stroke engine produced at Husqvarna's Italian operation.

The engine used a 66.4 x 72 mm bore and stroke and was fed by a 38 mm Mikuni TMX carburettor. Husqvarna specified digital capacitor-discharge ignition for the CR and an NGK BR8EG spark plug. Owners dealing with a worn original fuel system can consult the MXOwners carburettor information and replacement options. Factory lubrication guidance called for a richer 3 percent oil mixture during running-in and not less than 2 percent after running-in, making the two-stroke premix calculator useful when preparing fuel.

The CR 250 used a steel chassis with long-travel European suspension, combining Marzocchi front forks with a Sachs rear shock and conventional rising-rate linkage. Unlike KTM's contemporary PDS arrangement, the Husqvarna retained linkage beneath the swingarm, so bearing condition is an important consideration on surviving bikes. The MXOwners motorcycle bearing finder can help when refurbishing an older chassis.

Today the 2001 CR 250 is far less commonly encountered than the Japanese 250s of the same period, which makes an original example particularly interesting. Age-related maintenance is usually more important than performance modification: check the piston and rings, power-valve mechanism, crank seals, Mikuni carburettor, wheel and linkage bearings, suspension seals and cooling system before serious riding. Properly maintained, the CR 250 remains a distinctive reminder of Husqvarna's Italian era and of a period when buyers still had a remarkably diverse selection of full-size 250 cc two-stroke motocross machines.
