2002 Husqvarna CR125 – Refining the Italian-Built 125 Motocrosser
The 2002 Husqvarna CR125 was an evolutionary update rather than a new generation. It continued the Italian-built Husqvarna 125 motocross platform with its 124.82cc liquid-cooled two-stroke engine, six-speed gearbox, steel chassis and long-travel European suspension. In a class dominated by Japanese 125s, the CR125 remained an unusual alternative with its own distinctive chassis feel and styling.
Its engine used a 54.0 x 54.5 mm bore and stroke, reed-valve induction and a 38 mm Mikuni TMX carburettor. Correct jetting and carburettor condition are particularly important on an older 125, where even small intake or fuel-system problems can noticeably affect throttle response. Owners replacing worn components can compare carburettor replacement options for suitable alternatives.
Suspension remained a major part of the Husqvarna package, with a 45 mm upside-down fork offering 300 mm of travel and a progressive-linkage rear shock providing 320 mm. Fork oil level, seals and internal condition are especially important on a machine now more than two decades old, and the MXOwners fork oil reference can help when servicing the front suspension.
For owners restoring or maintaining a 2002 CR125, attention should also go to linkage bearings, wheel bearings, the HTS exhaust power-valve system, air-filter sealing and the piston and rings. The bike was built as a genuine competition machine, so maintenance history matters more than mileage. A properly sorted example still delivers the light weight, sharp two-stroke response and distinctive European character that made Husqvarna's CR125 stand apart in the early 2000s.
