2003 Suzuki RM250 – Further Refinement of Suzuki’s Two-Stroke Racer

The 2003 Suzuki RM250 was primarily an evolutionary update rather than a completely new generation. Suzuki continued refining the competitive platform developed over the previous seasons, retaining the familiar 249cc liquid-cooled two-stroke engine and the quick-handling chassis characteristics that had become a trademark of the RM motocross range.

The engine retained its 66.4 mm bore and 72.0 mm stroke, with reed-valve induction and a Keihin PWK38 carburettor. Suzuki’s exhaust power-valve system helped provide a broader and more controllable spread of two-stroke power. On surviving machines, carburettor condition and jetting can have a major influence on starting, throttle response and overall performance. Owners investigating worn or modified induction components can consult the MXOwners carburettor information and replacement options.

Showa suspension remained an important part of the RM250 package, with an inverted cartridge fork providing approximately 310 mm of travel and a linkage-equipped rear shock offering approximately 320 mm. With age, fork seals, bushings, shock components and linkage bearings deserve careful inspection. Owners servicing the front suspension can also use the MXOwners fork oil level reference when checking available service information.

The RM250 continued with the established 21-inch front and 19-inch rear motocross wheel combination, using 80/100-21 and 110/90-19 tyres. The MXOwners motorcycle tyre size guide can help owners compare modern replacement sizes. While the 2003 model did not represent a ground-up redesign, it continued Suzuki’s development of a light, responsive and distinctly agile 250cc two-stroke during one of motocross’s most competitive transitional periods.
