2004 Suzuki RM250 – Refining the RM Two-Stroke Formula

The 2004 Suzuki RM250 was primarily an evolutionary update rather than a completely new generation. Suzuki continued refining the 249cc two-stroke motocross platform developed over the preceding years, retaining the RM250’s familiar combination of strong two-stroke performance, light weight and the quick steering for which Suzuki motocross machines had become well known.

The liquid-cooled engine retained its 66.4 mm bore and 72.0 mm stroke, with reed-valve induction and a Keihin PWK38 carburettor. Suzuki’s exhaust power-valve system helped broaden the useful power delivery. On an RM250 of this age, carburettor condition, jetting and previous modifications can make a considerable difference to starting and throttle response. Owners investigating these areas can use the MXOwners carburettor information and replacement options.

The competition chassis continued to use long-travel Showa suspension, with an inverted cartridge fork providing approximately 310 mm of travel and a linkage-type rear shock providing approximately 320 mm. Fork seals and bushings, rear shock condition and suspension linkage bearings are all important inspection points on surviving bikes. The MXOwners fork oil level reference can assist when servicing the front suspension.

The RM250 retained the traditional motocross combination of a 21-inch front and 19-inch rear wheel, with 80/100-21 and 110/90-19 tyres. Owners selecting replacements can consult the MXOwners motorcycle tyre size guide. The 2004 RM250 was not a ground-up redesign, but it represents another stage in Suzuki’s continual refinement of its fast, agile 250cc two-stroke during the period when four-strokes were rapidly changing the motocross landscape.
