2004 Husqvarna TC450 – Refining Husqvarna's Modern 450 Four-Stroke

The 2004 Husqvarna TC450 was an evolutionary update rather than a completely new generation. The major change had already occurred when Husqvarna replaced its traditional big-bore four-stroke architecture with the more compact 449cc DOHC platform. For 2004 the company concentrated on refining that newer design while retaining the 97.0 x 60.76 mm bore and stroke, five-speed motocross transmission and steel-framed competition chassis.

The 449cc engine used twin overhead camshafts, four valves and a high 12.0:1 compression ratio. Fuel was supplied by a 41 mm Mikuni TMR flat-slide carburettor with an accelerator pump. Correct jetting, pump operation and slide condition are important on surviving machines, particularly when starting or throttle response becomes inconsistent. Owners rebuilding the original induction system can compare replacement carburettor options when original components are worn.

The chassis remained distinctly European, with a 45 mm Marzocchi Shiver inverted fork offering approximately 300 mm of travel and a Sachs shock working through Husqvarna's Progressive Soft Damp linkage at the rear. Correct oil specification and level are important when servicing these forks, and the MXOwners fork oil reference is useful when checking setup information.

For today's owner, maintenance history is critical. Frequent oil and filter changes, clean air filtration, accurate valve clearances and careful inspection of the cam chain, cooling system and hydraulic clutch are essential on a competition four-stroke of this era. Chassis bearings should also be checked closely after years of motocross use, with the MXOwners Bearing Finder useful when rebuilding the wheels, steering head or suspension linkage.

The 2004 TC450 did not rewrite the formula established by the previous model, but it helped consolidate Husqvarna's transition into the modern 450 four-stroke motocross class. With its compact DOHC engine, hydraulic clutch, Italian chassis and Marzocchi-Sachs suspension combination, it remains a distinctive alternative to the Japanese 450Fs that were rapidly reshaping motocross in the early 2000s.
