The 2005 Suzuki RM-Z250 was not an all-new generation, but it received enough substantial engine and cooling changes to make it much more than a simple graphics update. The basic steel-framed platform introduced with the first RM-Z250 remained, yet Suzuki concentrated heavily on improving power delivery, high-rpm performance, durability and ease of maintenance.
At the centre of the changes was the 249 cc DOHC four-stroke engine. The familiar 77.0 x 53.6 mm bore and stroke and 12.6:1 compression ratio remained, but Suzuki revised the cylinder head with straighter exhaust ports and an extended centre rib in the intake ports. These changes were intended to improve gas flow and strengthen low-to-midrange response without sacrificing the high-revving character expected from a competitive 250 four-stroke.
Ignition timing and the rev-limiter settings were also revised to improve high-rpm performance and over-rev. Fuel continued to be supplied by a 37 mm Keihin FCR flat-slide carburettor equipped with a throttle-position sensor. The carburettor and digital ignition worked together to alter ignition timing according to engine speed and throttle opening. Owners maintaining or restoring the original induction system can compare replacement carburettor options if the stock unit is worn or incomplete.
Suzuki also addressed several practical weaknesses found during the first season of RM-Z250 competition. The clutch received revised plates and improved spring material for better feel, while third and fourth gears were shot-peened to increase durability. A redesigned throttle valve and lower-friction throttle cable improved throttle action, and the airbox was reinforced to improve durability and sealing.
Cooling received a significant upgrade. The radiators were made approximately 40 mm longer, increasing core area and helping maintain a more stable operating temperature during hard motocross use. Suzuki also redesigned the oil-filter cover so the filter could be accessed without removing the water-pump cover or draining the coolant, making routine race servicing considerably easier.
The chassis remained based around the steel perimeter frame, with a 48 mm Kayaba cartridge fork offering 300 mm of front-wheel travel and a link-type rear suspension system providing 310 mm. Both ends offered extensive damping adjustment. Owners servicing the front suspension can refer to the MXOwners fork oil reference when checking suitable suspension fluid and setup information.
Standard motocross wheel sizes were 21 inches at the front and 19 inches at the rear, fitted with an 80/100-21 front tyre and 100/90-19 rear. Owners replacing tyres can compare fitments using the MXOwners tyre size guide.
Historically, the 2005 RM-Z250 represents Suzuki rapidly developing its first-generation 250 four-stroke after only a short time in competition. It still shared its basic origins with Kawasaki's early KX250F, but Suzuki was already refining the engine, cooling system and serviceability to suit its own racing programme. Owners rebuilding one today can use the MXOwners Parts Finder when checking replacement components and model-year compatibility.
