2006 Honda CR250R – Refining Honda’s Final Two-Stroke Generation

The 2006 Honda CR250R was a refinement of the aluminium-framed generation already established in the first half of the decade rather than a completely new motorcycle. By this stage Honda’s attention was increasingly focused on its CRF four-strokes, but the CR250R remained one of the company’s flagship two-stroke motocross machines and continued to receive detail development.

The engine retained its 249 cc liquid-cooled two-stroke layout with a 66.4 x 72.0 mm bore and stroke, reed-valve induction and Honda’s electronically controlled exhaust-valve system. Fuel was delivered by a 38 mm Mikuni TMX flat-slide carburettor. Correct jetting remains important on surviving bikes, and owners replacing worn induction components can compare replacement carburettor options.

Honda’s aluminium twin-spar frame remained a defining feature of the CR250R. The chassis was designed to give the bike precise steering while retaining stability through rough sections, and Showa suspension was fitted at both ends. The 47 mm twin-chamber fork offered extensive compression and rebound adjustment, while the Pro-Link rear suspension used a fully adjustable Showa shock. Owners servicing the front end can refer to the MXOwners fork oil reference.

The 2006 CR250R is historically interesting because it sits near the end of Honda’s full-size two-stroke motocross era. The model still offered the light feel, simple engine layout and explosive power delivery that made 250 two-strokes popular, but the market was rapidly moving toward four-stroke machinery. Owners restoring or maintaining one today can use the MXOwners Parts Finder when checking replacement components and model-year compatibility.
