2006 Kawasaki KX250 – Refining the Redesigned Two-Stroke

The 2006 Kawasaki KX250 was primarily a refinement of the heavily redesigned 2005 machine rather than another new generation. Kawasaki retained the steel perimeter chassis, 249 cc KIPS-equipped two-stroke engine and 48 mm Kayaba twin-chamber fork introduced the previous year, while concentrating on smaller changes to suspension, reliability and rider feel.

Engine changes included a revised piston profile and other detail improvements, while the exhaust system received a longer, larger-volume silencer. The basic 66.4 x 72.0 mm engine architecture and Keihin PWK38S carburettor remained familiar. Owners rebuilding the induction system can compare replacement carburettor options when the original unit is worn or missing.

Suspension received useful updates. The Kayaba fork gained a revised internal sleeve intended to improve resistance to bottoming, while the Uni-Trak rear shock once again provided separate high- and low-speed compression adjustment. Correct servicing is important on the twin-chamber fork, and the MXOwners fork oil reference can help when checking suitable oil information.

The 2006 bike also gained Renthal aluminium handlebars and petal-style brake rotors. It retained kick starting, a five-speed gearbox and premixed fuel, with a 32:1 ratio commonly specified for competition use. The MXOwners premix calculator makes mixing different fuel quantities straightforward. Historically, the 2006 KX250 sits near the end of Kawasaki's full-size two-stroke era, carrying forward the major 2005 redesign with targeted improvements rather than wholesale change.
