The 2006 Kawasaki KX250F was a major redesign and an important turning point for Kawasaki's 250 four-stroke motocrosser. After two seasons using the first-generation steel-framed platform developed through Kawasaki's collaboration with Suzuki, the 2006 KX250F became a distinctly Kawasaki machine with an aluminium perimeter frame, extensively revised engine and new suspension package.
The most visible change was the aluminium chassis. Kawasaki replaced the previous steel perimeter frame with a twin-beam aluminium design intended to reduce weight, centralise mass and improve the balance between cornering response and stability. The new frame also allowed Kawasaki to reshape the motorcycle through the radiator and seat area, giving riders more freedom to move forward when entering turns.
The 249 cc DOHC engine retained its familiar 77.0 x 53.6 mm bore and stroke, but Kawasaki substantially revised the package around those dimensions. Compression increased to 13.5:1 and changes were made to the cylinder head, intake and exhaust systems to increase power and sharpen throttle response. The engine remained a high-revving four-valve design intended specifically for competition use.
A Keihin FCR 37 mm flat-slide carburettor continued to handle fuel delivery. Jetting, fuel-screw adjustment and accelerator-pump setup therefore remained important to getting the best response from the engine, particularly when altitude, temperature or exhaust systems changed. Owners working on incomplete bikes can compare replacement carburettor options when the original unit is worn or missing.
Suspension changed significantly with the new chassis. Kawasaki moved to 47 mm Showa twin-chamber forks at the front and a Showa shock working through the Uni-Trak rear linkage. The twin-chamber design helped maintain more consistent damping during hard motocross use, while extensive compression and rebound adjustment allowed the suspension to be tuned for rider weight and track conditions. Owners servicing these forks can use the MXOwners fork oil reference when checking suitable suspension fluid and setup information.
The 2006 KX250F also received petal-style brake discs, a feature that became visually associated with Kawasaki's modern motocross range. Standard wheel sizes remained the familiar 21-inch front and 19-inch rear combination. Owners replacing tyres can check standard sizing through the MXOwners tyre size guide.
Maintenance remained demanding compared with a trail bike or traditional two-stroke. Frequent oil changes, careful air-filter servicing and regular valve-clearance checks were essential on the highly tuned four-stroke engine. The engine and transmission shared the same lubricant, making clean oil particularly important for both engine and gearbox life.
Historically, the 2006 KX250F marks the point where Kawasaki's 250 four-stroke developed its own identity. The first 2004 and 2005 machines established Kawasaki in the class, but the aluminium-framed 2006 model created the basic design direction that later KX250F generations would continue to refine.
