2006 Suzuki RM-Z450: Refining Suzuki's Championship-Winning 450
The 2006 Suzuki RM-Z450 was the second model year of Suzuki's purpose-built 450 four-stroke motocrosser, so it was an evolutionary development rather than an all-new generation. The basic formula remained the same: a 449 cc DOHC four-stroke single, Keihin FCR carburettor, four-speed transmission, aluminium twin-spar frame and fully adjustable Showa suspension. After the remarkable competition debut of the original RM-Z450, Suzuki had little reason to abandon the concept and instead concentrated on refinement.
The RM-Z450 had already established serious racing credentials in its first season. Ricky Carmichael had taken Suzuki's new 450 into the 2005 AMA outdoor motocross championship and delivered an extraordinary championship-winning campaign. That success meant the 2006 model arrived not as an unproven newcomer, but as the successor to a machine that had already demonstrated what Suzuki's new four-stroke platform could achieve at the highest level of American motocross.
For owners today, the 2006 remains very much an early-generation 450. It uses a Keihin FCR40MX carburettor rather than electronic fuel injection, starts by kickstarter and requires the disciplined maintenance expected of a competition four-stroke. Correct carburettor condition and setup remain particularly important, and owners chasing worn or troublesome fuel-system components can consult the MXOwners carburettor reference and replacement information.
The Showa suspension provides around 310 mm of travel at both ends, with extensive adjustment for motocross use. Fork servicing is particularly sensitive to correct oil type and quantity, with Suzuki specifying SS-05 or equivalent fork oil. Owners rebuilding or setting up the front end can also use the MXOwners fork oil reference when researching suspension servicing information.
The 2006 RM-Z450 therefore occupies an interesting place in Suzuki history. It was no longer the headline-grabbing first RM-Z450, but it carried forward the design that had immediately put Suzuki among the major players in the 450 four-stroke era. For modern owners, careful model-year identification remains important when ordering parts, as later RM-Z450 generations underwent substantial mechanical and chassis development. The MXOwners parts finder can help when researching replacement components for these early machines.
