2006 Husqvarna TC450 – Sharpening the Italian 450 Motocrosser
The 2006 Husqvarna TC450 was a significant refinement of the existing 450 platform rather than an entirely new generation. The basic 449cc DOHC engine and steel-frame layout remained, but Husqvarna made meaningful changes to the intake, suspension and race specification to keep the TC450 competitive in a class that was developing rapidly.
The engine retained its 97.0 x 60.8 mm bore and stroke and high 12.0:1 compression ratio, but fuel delivery moved to a Keihin FCR flat-slide carburettor. The FCR became a benchmark carburettor on competition four-strokes because of its strong accelerator-pump response and tunability. On an older TC450, slide wear, pilot-circuit condition and pump timing can have a major effect on starting and throttle response, so owners can compare replacement carburettor options when restoring the intake system.
The chassis remained distinctly Husqvarna, using a steel frame and hydraulic clutch, but the suspension package was upgraded for competition use. A 45 mm Marzocchi closed-cartridge fork provided approximately 300 mm of front-wheel travel, while an Öhlins rear shock worked through Husqvarna's progressive linkage system. The MXOwners fork oil reference is useful when servicing the original Marzocchi units, where correct oil level and condition are critical to damping performance.
For owners today, maintenance history is particularly important. The 450 was a high-performance race engine, so regular oil and filter changes, accurate valve clearances, a clean foam air filter and attention to cam-chain condition are essential. Wheel, steering-head and linkage bearings also deserve careful inspection after years of motocross use, and the MXOwners Bearing Finder can help during chassis restoration.
The 2006 TC450 did not replace Husqvarna's existing 450 concept, but it represented a more developed and focused version of it. With Keihin carburetion, European suspension hardware and the distinctive steel-frame Italian chassis, it remains an interesting alternative to the Japanese 450Fs that were increasingly dominating motocross during the mid-2000s.
