2007 Honda CRF250R: Refining the Twin-Pipe Formula
The 2007 Honda CRF250R was a refinement year rather than an all-new generation. Honda had already made the larger step for 2006 with the 40 mm carburettor, higher compression and twin-muffler exhaust, so the 2007 model concentrated on improving throttle response, midrange power, clutch durability, braking feel and suspension behaviour.
One of the main targets was the 40 mm Keihin FCR carburettor. Some 2006 owners had experienced a hesitation or bog during sudden throttle openings, especially when landing from jumps. For 2007 Honda redesigned the accelerator-pump linkage and altered the pump fill circuit to make fuel delivery more immediate and less affected by movement inside the float bowl. Owners working on these ageing systems can use the MXOwners carburettor reference when checking replacement or repair options.
Honda also revised the camshaft, valve springs, cylinder-head porting and exhaust header. A crankcase venting change, derived from race-team development, reduced pumping losses as the piston moved downward. Together these changes gave the engine stronger low-to-midrange response while retaining the high-rpm character expected from a 250 four-stroke motocrosser.
The chassis remained fundamentally the same, but Honda revalved the Showa fork and strengthened the clutch basket and clutch centre. A revised front brake lever changed the leverage ratio to improve braking modulation as lever pressure increased. The 47 mm twin-chamber Showa fork still offered extensive adjustment, and owners rebuilding it can use the MXOwners fork oil reference when checking service information.
For owners today, the 2007 CRF250R represents a mature version of Honda's early carburetted 250 four-stroke platform. It retained the distinctive twin exhaust while addressing several of the 2006 model's rough edges. Regular valve checks, separate engine and transmission oil changes, careful air-filter maintenance and attention to carburettor condition remain central to keeping one running well. The MXOwners parts finder can also help when identifying replacement components for restoration or maintenance.
