2007 Suzuki RM-Z250 – Suzuki Creates Its Own New Generation

The 2007 Suzuki RM-Z250 was a major redesign and one of the most important model years in the history of the RM-Z250. The earlier 2004-2006 machines had their origins in Suzuki's technical cooperation with Kawasaki, but for 2007 Suzuki introduced a substantially new motorcycle with its own aluminium chassis, revised engine and Showa suspension package.

The new frame was one of the most obvious changes. Suzuki abandoned the steel perimeter chassis of the first-generation bike and adopted an aluminium twin-spar design similar in concept to the company's RM-Z450. The new frame reduced weight and allowed Suzuki to concentrate mass closer to the centre of the motorcycle while retaining the sharp cornering character that had long been associated with the RM motocross range.

The 249 cc DOHC engine retained the familiar 77.0 x 53.6 mm bore and stroke, but it was extensively revised. Compression increased to approximately 13.4:1 and Suzuki redesigned the cylinder head, intake tract, exhaust system and internal components to produce stronger power across a wider rpm range. The objective was not simply maximum peak output, but a more usable engine that could pull strongly from corners while continuing to make power at high rpm.

Fuel continued to be delivered by a 37 mm Keihin FCR flat-slide carburettor fitted with a throttle-position sensor. The FCR provided excellent response when correctly tuned, although jetting, fuel-screw adjustment and accelerator-pump setup remained important parts of race preparation. Owners repairing worn or incomplete induction systems can compare replacement carburettor options.

Suspension also changed significantly. Suzuki fitted a 47 mm Showa twin-chamber fork and matching Showa rear shock, both with extensive damping adjustment. The fork provided approximately 310 mm of travel, while the rear linkage system offered a similar amount of wheel movement. Owners servicing the front suspension can use the MXOwners fork oil reference when checking suitable oil and servicing information.

The redesigned chassis also allowed Suzuki to narrow the motorcycle through the tank and seat area, helping riders move forward more easily when entering corners. A conventional 21-inch front and 19-inch rear wheel combination remained, with an 80/100-21 front tyre and 100/90-19 rear. Replacement sizing can be checked using the MXOwners tyre size guide.

Maintenance remained typical of a competition 250 four-stroke. Frequent oil changes, careful air-filter servicing and regular valve-clearance checks were essential, particularly on machines used for racing. The engine and gearbox shared their lubricant, so maintaining clean oil was important for both engine and transmission durability.

Historically, the 2007 RM-Z250 is significant because it marked Suzuki moving beyond the shared first-generation platform and establishing the RM-Z250 as a distinctly Suzuki-developed motocross bike. Its aluminium frame, revised engine and Showa suspension formed the basis for the model's continuing development, making it an important machine for owners and collectors. The MXOwners Parts Finder can help when checking replacement components for this first year of the new generation.
