2007 Yamaha YZ250F: Refining the Aluminium-Frame Formula
The 2007 Yamaha YZ250F was an evolutionary update to the aluminium-framed generation introduced the previous year. Yamaha retained the familiar 249 cc five-valve engine, Keihin FCR-MX37 carburettor, aluminium semi-double-cradle frame and KYB Speed Sensitive System suspension, but concentrated on making the bike feel lighter, turn more precisely and work better as a complete package.
Chassis refinement was the main story. The steering-head position was revised and the rear shock length altered slightly to improve front-end feel and cornering response. Yamaha also removed weight from numerous components, including chassis hardware, axle-related parts and brake components. Dry weight dropped to 92.7 kg, helping the 2007 model feel noticeably more agile than the first aluminium-frame version.
The engine remained mechanically familiar, using a 77.0 x 53.6 mm bore and stroke, 12.5:1 compression ratio and five-speed gearbox. A Keihin FCR-MX37 carburettor continued to handle fuelling, and correct jetting, accelerator-pump operation and hot-start function remain important to how these bikes start and respond. Owners working on the original carburettor can use the MXOwners carburettor reference when checking replacement options.
Suspension remained one of the YZ250F's strongest areas, with a 48 mm KYB Speed Sensitive System fork providing 300 mm of travel and a linkage-operated KYB rear shock providing just over 300 mm of rear wheel movement. Owners servicing the fork can refer to the MXOwners fork oil reference for oil and setup information.
For today's owner, the 2007 model sits in a useful part of YZ250F history: it retained the relatively straightforward carburetted five-valve engine but benefited from a year of development on Yamaha's aluminium chassis. Model-specific chassis, suspension and brake components should still be checked carefully when ordering parts through the MXOwners Parts Finder, while the original tyre sizes can be compared using the MXOwners Tyre Size Guide.
