2008 KTM 250 SX-F: Refining KTM's High-Revving 250 Four-Stroke

The 2008 KTM 250 SX-F was primarily a refinement of the substantially revised 2007 machine rather than another new generation. KTM retained the compact 249.5 cc DOHC engine, six-speed gearbox, chrome-molybdenum steel chassis and WP PDS suspension package, concentrating on making an already competitive 250F more polished and consistent.

The engine kept its 76.0 x 55.0 mm bore and stroke, 12.8:1 compression ratio and high-revving four-valve cylinder head. Fuel delivery remained through a Keihin FCR-MX 39 mm accelerator-pump carburettor, a defining component of the pre-fuel-injection 250F era. Owners dealing with worn slides, jets or complete carburettors can compare options through the MXOwners carburettor reference.

The chassis continued with KTM's steel frame and linkless WP PDS rear suspension. Up front, the 48 mm WP closed-cartridge fork provided 300 mm of travel, while the rear offered 335 mm. Suspension setup was an important part of getting the best from these machines, and the MXOwners fork oil reference is useful when servicing the original WP front end.

At only 96.5 kg without fuel, the 2008 SX-F remained exceptionally light for a four-stroke motocross bike. Its six-speed transmission, hydraulic clutch and strong Brembo-style disc braking gave it a distinctly KTM character. Historically, the 2008 model represents the maturing phase of KTM's first serious 250F programme, before fuel injection and later chassis changes transformed the class again.
