2008 Kawasaki KX450F: Five Speeds for Kawasaki's Big Four-Stroke

The 2008 Kawasaki KX450F was an important evolution of Kawasaki's original 450 four-stroke motocrosser rather than a completely new generation. The basic 449 cc DOHC engine, aluminium perimeter-frame concept and Kayaba suspension package remained, but Kawasaki made one particularly significant change: the distinctive four-speed gearbox of the 2006 and 2007 machines was replaced by a five-speed transmission.

That extra ratio broadened the KX450F's usefulness while retaining the powerful character that had defined the first two model years. The engine continued to breathe through a Keihin FCR40 flat-slide carburettor, placing the 2008 machine firmly among the last generation of carburetted premier-class Kawasaki four-strokes. Owners restoring the original fuel system can use the MXOwners carburettor reference and replacement information when researching worn components or replacement options.

The chassis continued with Kawasaki's aluminium perimeter-frame design and 48 mm Kayaba AOS inverted forks, backed by a New Uni-Trak linkage rear shock. Both ends offered approximately 315 mm of travel and extensive adjustment for motocross use. With these bikes now well into their second decade, correct suspension servicing can transform how a tired example feels, and the MXOwners fork oil reference is useful when preparing for a fork rebuild.

The KX450F had already become an important part of Kawasaki's factory racing program by this stage, with James Stewart closely associated with the big green four-stroke during its early years. The model helped carry Kawasaki through the industry's rapid transition away from 250 two-strokes toward 450 four-strokes at the highest levels of motocross and Supercross.

For owners, the five-speed transmission is an easy way to distinguish the 2008 mechanically from the earlier 2006 and 2007 KX450F. Kawasaki continued to develop the model rapidly, so components should always be checked against the exact year before ordering. The MXOwners parts finder can help when researching replacement parts, while the motocross tyre size guide is useful for checking the standard 90/100-21 front and 120/80-19 rear combination.

The 2008 KX450F therefore sits at an interesting point in the model's history. It retained the raw carburetted, kick-start character of Kawasaki's original KX450F while introducing the five-speed gearbox that made the machine more versatile. Fuel injection and further major development were just around the corner, making the 2008 model one of the final examples of Kawasaki's early carburetted 450 motocross era.
