The 2008 Husqvarna TC450 was a significant redesign rather than a simple annual update. The familiar 449cc DOHC engine continued, but Husqvarna substantially revised the chassis, ergonomics, suspension and bodywork. The aim was to make the TC450 slimmer, easier to move around on and more competitive against the increasingly refined Japanese 450 motocross machines.
The engine retained its proven 97.0 x 60.76 mm bore and stroke and 12.9:1 compression ratio. Fuel was supplied by a 41 mm Keihin FCR flat-slide carburettor with accelerator pump and throttle-position sensor. The FCR remained one of the benchmark motocross carburettors of the era, offering excellent throttle response when correctly jetted. Owners dealing with worn slides, jets or accelerator-pump components can compare replacement carburettor options when rebuilding the original induction system.
The biggest development was the chassis. Husqvarna introduced a reshaped steel frame using a mixture of round, oval and box-section tubing, together with revised geometry intended to centralise weight and allow the rider to move further forward. The tank, seat, side panels and radiator shrouds were also redesigned to create a much narrower rider interface. Compared with earlier TC450s, the 2008 motorcycle felt more compact and considerably more modern.
Suspension was also substantially revised. The front used a large 50 mm Marzocchi twin-chamber inverted fork with 300 mm of wheel travel, while the rear switched to a Sachs Progressive Soft Damp shock with approximately 296 mm of travel. The rear unit offered separate high- and low-speed compression adjustment along with rebound and spring preload. The factory specified SAE 7.5 fork oil at approximately 310 cm³ per leg, and the MXOwners fork oil reference can help when servicing the original Marzocchi units.
The TC450 retained a five-speed motocross transmission and hydraulic wet multi-plate clutch. Final drive used a 14-tooth countershaft sprocket and 50-tooth rear sprocket. Brembo brakes consisted of a 260 mm front disc and 240 mm rear disc, while the bike used the normal motocross combination of a 21-inch front wheel and 19-inch rear. Original tyre sizes were 80/100-21 and 110/90-19, which can be compared with current replacements using the MXOwners tyre size guide.
Maintenance remained important on the race-focused 450. The engine, gearbox and primary drive shared AGIP Racing 4T 10W-60 oil, with approximately 1.7 litres required when changing the filter. Frequent oil and filter servicing, clean air filtration and regular inspection of valve clearances and cam-chain condition are essential on machines that have spent years in motocross use.
Historically, the 2008 TC450 is important because Husqvarna modernised the motorcycle around its established engine instead of simply replacing the powerplant. The redesigned frame, slimmer ergonomics, new bodywork and Sachs rear suspension changed the way the bike felt and represented a clear break from the older TC chassis. For restorers today, the MXOwners Parts Finder can help identify correct components because many 2008 chassis and body parts differ from those used on the preceding models.
The result was one of the most developed carburetted TC450s of the Italian Husqvarna era. It still had the distinctive steel-frame construction and mechanical character that separated Husqvarna from the Japanese competition, but the 2008 redesign made it slimmer, more agile and much closer to the modern 450 motocross formula.
