| Service Notes | Competition motocross model. The 2008 TC510 used Husqvarna's redesigned chassis and bodywork with revised ergonomics and suspension. Change engine oil and filter frequently, clean and re-oil the air filter after dusty riding and regularly inspect valve clearances, cam-chain condition, hydraulic clutch, cooling system, drive chain, wheel bearings, steering-head bearings and suspension linkage. |
The 2008 Husqvarna TC510 was a significant redesign rather than a minor annual update. The familiar 501cc DOHC big-bore engine remained, but Husqvarna substantially reworked the chassis, bodywork, ergonomics and suspension package. The changes mirrored the wider redevelopment of Husqvarna's motocross range and gave the TC510 a noticeably slimmer, more modern feel than the earlier machines.
The 501cc engine retained its 97.0 mm bore and 67.8 mm stroke with a high 12.5:1 compression ratio. Fuel delivery continued through a 41 mm Keihin FCR-MX flat-slide carburettor with accelerator pump and throttle-position sensing. The FCR suits the huge torque of the 510 well, but correct pilot jetting, slide condition and accelerator-pump adjustment are important for clean starting and throttle response. Owners rebuilding the original intake can compare replacement carburettor options when original components are worn.
The most important development for 2008 was the chassis. Husqvarna introduced a redesigned steel frame using a combination of round, oval and box-section tubing, along with revised geometry intended to centralise mass and improve rider movement. The fuel tank, seat, radiator shrouds and side panels were also reshaped, giving the TC510 a narrower midsection and allowing the rider to move further forward in corners.
Suspension was updated to suit the new chassis. The front used a 50 mm Marzocchi twin-chamber inverted fork with approximately 300 mm of travel, while a Sachs Progressive Soft Damp shock replaced the Öhlins unit used on the preceding model. Rear-wheel travel was approximately 296 mm, with adjustment for spring preload, high- and low-speed compression and rebound damping. Owners servicing the original front suspension can use the MXOwners fork oil reference when checking oil specification and setup.
The 2008 TC510 retained its five-speed motocross gearbox and hydraulically operated wet multi-plate clutch. Standard wheel sizes remained 21 inches at the front and 19 inches at the rear, using the typical motocross tyre combination of 80/100-21 and 110/90-19. Current equivalents can be checked with the MXOwners tyre size guide.
Although the TC510 shared much of its engine architecture with Husqvarna's TE enduro models, the TC was the dedicated motocross version. It used motocross gearing, a 19-inch rear wheel and competition equipment rather than the lighting, enduro instrumentation and trail-oriented hardware fitted to the TE510. This distinction is important today because many surviving TC models have been fitted with lights or other enduro-style equipment during their lives.
Maintenance history is especially important on the big-bore 510. The engine, gearbox and primary drive shared the same oil supply, and frequent oil and filter changes were essential under competition use. Valve clearances, cam-chain condition, cooling system, clutch and air filtration also deserve close attention. When restoring a bike that has seen years of racing, the MXOwners Bearing Finder can also help identify replacements for worn wheel, steering-head and suspension-linkage bearings.
The 2008 TC510 is historically interesting because Husqvarna modernised nearly everything around the engine while retaining the enormous torque that defined the model. The result was a slimmer, more agile and more contemporary big-bore motocrosser without losing the distinctive steel-frame character of the Italian-built Husqvarnas.
