2008 Yamaha YZ250: Lighter Details, Same Proven Two-Stroke Formula
The 2008 Yamaha YZ250 was a minor-update model rather than a new generation. Yamaha retained the aluminium frame, 249 cc reed-valve two-stroke engine, 38 mm Keihin PWK carburettor and highly regarded KYB Speed Sensitive System suspension that had already established the basic character of the modern YZ250.
Most of the 2008 changes focused on reducing unsprung weight and sharpening chassis response. Yamaha fitted lighter fork lugs, revised fork guards, wave-style brake rotors and a smaller front brake caliper. The fork stanchions were also shortened and internal settings revised, while the rear shock received matching setup changes. Owners servicing the front suspension can use the MXOwners fork oil reference when checking oil and setup information.
The engine remained largely unchanged and continued to deliver the broad, responsive powerband that had become one of the YZ250's biggest strengths. Fueling still came from the 38 mm Keihin PWK carburettor, and owners working on ageing examples can use the MXOwners carburettor reference when looking at replacement or repair options.
Yamaha continued to specify 30:1 premix using Yamalube 2-R or an equivalent racing two-stroke oil, while the five-speed gearbox used its own separate oil supply. The MXOwners premix calculator can help when mixing fuel accurately.
Historically, the 2008 YZ250 is a good example of Yamaha refining rather than reinventing a successful package. While rival Japanese manufacturers were steadily withdrawing from the 250 two-stroke class, Yamaha kept improving the details of the YZ250 and maintained a model line that would continue long after many expected it to disappear.
