2009 Suzuki RM-Z250 – The Last Carburettor-Era RM-Z250

The 2009 Suzuki RM-Z250 was primarily a refinement of the existing RM-Z250 rather than a major redesign. Suzuki retained the aluminium chassis, 249 cc DOHC four-stroke engine and Keihin FCR carburettor that defined the previous model, concentrating on detail improvements before the much larger changes that arrived with the next generation.

Its 249 cc engine used a 77.0 x 53.6 mm bore and stroke, four valves and a high 13.4:1 compression ratio. Fuel was still delivered through a 37 mm Keihin FCR flat-slide carburettor, making the 2009 model one of the final RM-Z250s where traditional jetting, accelerator-pump setup and carburettor tuning were part of normal race preparation. Owners replacing worn or missing induction components can compare replacement carburettor options.

The aluminium twin-spar chassis continued Suzuki's emphasis on sharp cornering and responsive handling. A 47 mm Showa twin-chamber fork and Showa link-type rear shock provided approximately 310 mm of travel at each end. Correct oil, bleeding and adjustment are important on these competition forks, and the MXOwners fork oil reference is useful when servicing the front suspension.

For owners today, the 2009 RM-Z250 represents an interesting transition point. It combines Suzuki's mature carburetted four-stroke package with the lightweight RM-Z chassis just before electronic fuel injection became part of the model's development. When sourcing replacement components for an older race bike, the MXOwners Parts Finder can also help identify suitable parts.
