| Service Notes | Competition motocross model. The 2009 TC450 received a frame approximately 1 kg lighter than the 2008 unit with revised rigidity, updated gearshift mechanism, revised timing-chain tensioner, lubrication-system changes, new titanium exhaust, wave brake discs and revised suspension settings. Change engine oil and filter frequently and regularly inspect valve clearances, cam chain, clutch, cooling system, drive chain and chassis bearings. |
The 2009 Husqvarna TC450 was a significant development of the redesigned 2008 platform rather than an entirely new generation. Husqvarna retained the familiar 449cc DOHC engine and basic chassis architecture, but a new lighter frame, revised engine internals, redesigned exhaust and suspension updates made the 2009 machine considerably more than a graphics change. It arrived during an interesting period for Husqvarna, shortly after BMW ownership had brought new investment and renewed attention to the Italian-built competition range.
The engine retained its established 97.0 x 60.76 mm bore and stroke and 12.9:1 compression ratio. Unlike the TE enduro models, which had moved to electronic fuel injection, the TC450 motocrosser continued to use a 41 mm Keihin FCR flat-slide carburettor. The FCR provided excellent response when correctly set up, but accelerator-pump condition, pilot jetting and slide wear can make a noticeable difference on an older bike. Owners rebuilding the original induction system can compare replacement carburettor options when components are no longer serviceable.
Several important internal changes were aimed at reliability and shifting quality. Husqvarna revised the gear-change linkage, lever and selector mechanisms to provide quicker and more accurate shifts. A new timing-chain tensioner reduced pressure on the chain and was intended to extend component life, while lubrication-system revisions included a new oil-pressure relief valve, updated bearings and a revised oil filter arrangement. These changes addressed the sort of details that matter greatly on a competition four-stroke expected to spend much of its life at high rpm.
The biggest chassis change was a new steel frame approximately 1 kg lighter than the 2008 unit. Husqvarna also revised its rigidity to improve traction and rider feedback without abandoning the steel-frame construction that distinguished the TC from its aluminium-framed Japanese rivals. The geometry remained reasonably neutral, giving the 2009 bike improved cornering confidence while retaining the straight-line stability for which Husqvarnas were known.
Suspension continued with a 50 mm Marzocchi twin-chamber inverted fork offering approximately 300 mm of travel. At the rear, the Sachs Progressive Soft Damp shock worked through a linkage system and provided around 296 mm of wheel travel. Both ends received revised settings for 2009 based on race-development feedback. Owners maintaining the original Marzocchi front end can use the MXOwners fork oil reference when checking service information.
The exhaust system was also redesigned, using titanium construction and revised tuning intended to make the engine's power delivery smoother and more progressive. New wave-type brake discs appeared front and rear, measuring 260 mm and 240 mm respectively. The normal 21-inch front and 19-inch rear motocross wheel combination remained, with 80/100-21 and 110/90-19 tyres. Modern replacements can be compared using the MXOwners tyre size guide.
For today's owner, maintenance history remains critical. Frequent oil and filter changes, accurate valve-clearance checks, a clean and correctly sealed foam air filter and careful inspection of the timing chain and tensioner are important. The gearbox improvements make correct 2009 parts identification worthwhile as well, and the MXOwners Parts Finder can help when sourcing components for a restoration.
Historically, the 2009 TC450 represents Husqvarna refining an already modernised platform rather than starting again. The lighter frame, improved shifting, revised lubrication system, titanium exhaust and updated suspension all addressed practical weaknesses while retaining the character of the Italian-built 450. It remained heavier-feeling than some contemporary Japanese machines, but it offered strong stability, excellent Brembo braking and a distinctive steel-frame personality that made it unmistakably Husqvarna.
