2010 KTM 250 SX-F: Refinement Before the Next Generation

The 2010 KTM 250 SX-F was primarily a refinement of the existing model rather than a major redesign. KTM left the basic 248.6 cc DOHC engine and six-speed transmission largely unchanged, focusing instead on chassis detail, suspension settings, braking feel and durability before the much more substantial changes that would arrive for 2011.

The high-revving engine retained its 76.0 x 54.8 mm bore and stroke, 12.8:1 compression ratio and Keihin FCR-MX 39 mm accelerator-pump carburettor. KTM revised ignition programming and fitted more durable piston rings, while the longer silencer helped the bike meet tighter sound limits. Owners maintaining the original fuel system can compare components through the MXOwners carburettor reference.

Chassis changes included new fixed 22 mm-offset triple clamps, replacing the previous adjustable arrangement, together with a tapered steering stem intended to improve flex characteristics. The WP 48 mm closed-cartridge fork received revised valving, seals and bushings to reduce friction, while the PDS rear shock was also revalved. Front travel remained 300 mm and rear travel 335 mm. The MXOwners fork oil reference is useful when servicing the original WP front end.

The 2010 250 SX-F remained one of the most distinctive bikes in the 250F class. It still used a carburettor, steel frame, six-speed gearbox and linkless PDS rear suspension when many competitors followed different technical paths. Historically, it represents the final mature version of KTM's first-generation carburetted SX-F concept before fuel injection, linkage suspension and a substantially revised chassis arrived with the next generation.
