| Service Notes | High-performance competition motorcycle requiring frequent maintenance. Engine oil capacity: 0.67 litres after draining, 0.69 litres with oil filter replacement and 0.85 litres after disassembly. Cold valve clearances: intake 0.12 ± 0.03 mm; exhaust 0.21 ± 0.03 mm. Idle speed: 2,000 ± 100 rpm. Cooling-system capacity: 1.02 litres after draining; 1.10 litres after disassembly. Inspect spark plug using a wire-type gauge and replace rather than bending precious-metal electrodes if the gap is incorrect. Maintain engine and transmission oil separately. Check the three fork air chambers at the specified temperature with the forks unloaded. Inspect fork seals, valve clearances, piston, cam chain, fuel system, air filter, coolant, drive chain and suspension bearings regularly. The 2016 engine uses titanium exhaust valves and revised valve-train components; confirm model-year compatibility before ordering replacements. Refer to the 2016 Honda CRF250R Owner's Manual and Competition Handbook for maintenance intervals and service procedures. |
2016 Honda CRF250R – More Power, Revised Air Forks and HRC-Inspired Engine Development
The 2016 Honda CRF250R received one of the most extensive engine updates since the introduction of the twin-exhaust generation in 2014. Although the motorcycle retained its aluminium twin-spar chassis, fuel-injected Unicam engine architecture and Showa air suspension, Honda introduced substantial changes to improve horsepower, torque and suspension performance. Much of the development drew on experience from Honda's international motocross racing programme, particularly the highly competitive MX2 class.
At the centre of the update was a thoroughly revised 249.4 cc four-stroke engine. Honda introduced a lighter piston and connecting rod, increased the compression ratio from 13.5:1 to 13.8:1 and redesigned the cylinder-head ports to improve gas flow. The exhaust valves changed from steel to titanium, matching the titanium intake valves already used in the engine. A revised camshaft profile
